Sphene Gemstone
Loose Gems Sphene Or
Titanite
Not much of the demand for loose gemstones is for
sphene, infact not many gem lovers are aware that a gem by this
name exists. In case you have heard of a gem stone called
titanite, it would be interesting to know that both titanite
and sphene gems are the same. In it's natural form, sphene shows a
wedge like formation. Experts used the Greek word 'sphenos' meaning,
'wedge' to derive a name for sphene.
We just said that sphene and titanite are different
names for the same gem stone. If one went strictly by the data
supplied by the International Mineralogical Association, the name
sphene should have been discontinued and the stone would be called
titanite. It was felt that this name better represented the gemstone
since, spehene did contain some amount of titanium. While many
scientists have jumped to use the name Titanite for the gem, the gem
and jewelry industry continues to call it sphene. This can be
confusing at times, it probably helps that a fairly large number of
people use both names - they would therefore call the stone,
titanite sphene. We use the name titanite or sphene to mean
the same gemstone in this report.
If you had to read information on the
color of sphene gem stones, you would come across
descriptions like green, yellow, brown, red and probably even
orange. However references to titanite gems in the world of gems, go
by colors that are more common. We would say that, the sphene
gemstones are either yellow, green or brown. You should not forget
the color hues that could exist by a combination of these colors.
Loose sphene gem stones can also be a yellowish green, brownish
green or a yellowish brown color.
One very attractive property of sphene is it's fire
or dispersion. When light hits a gemstone, it reflects on the facets
and then returns to your eye. A simple entry and exit of light
through a gem does not imply that the gemstone has 'fire' or
'dispersion'. Here is why titanite gems can boast of having
a fire within them. Sphene has a high refractive index and this does
something special to light that enters the gem. It breaks the light
into different colors and all these colors seem to rush out of the
gemstone when light is reflected. Titanite or sphene gems are
therefore said to have high dispersion.
Talking about titanite or sphene cut and polished
gems, most of the stones would be faceted. This is
the ideal cutting type for a gem stone with high dispersion. The
multiple reflections of light on the facets combined with the high
dispersion, are best brought out in faceted sphene or titanite
stones. Do not be very strict about titanite or sphene gem stones
being eye clean. Expect to find some natural
inclusions in them unless, you are looking at small sizes
of less than 5mm. This is especially true of sphene gems with a
major green color component.
Since we are referring to loose titanite or sphene
gems in the context of gems and jewelry, we would say that
non-faceted (cabachon) cut gems do not appear very attractive. In
terms of durability, a modest hardness of 5 to 5.5
means that it is not a gem that can take much wear and tear. It is
better to choose sphene earrings or pendants rather than sphene gem
stone rings. Pendants and earrings are exposed to lesser wear and
tear as compared to rings. If you are very keen on getting a sphene
or titanite gemstone ring, look for a design that provides at least
moderate protection to the gem. It would be advisable not to wear
your sphene or titanite gem stone jewelry all day and night. Treat
them like 'special occassion' jewels, the last thing to put on when
going out and the first thing to take off when you return home!
Here is some advice on how to clean
sphene or titanite, we also include some tips to keep your sphene
gems or jewelry in good condition. It is risky to use
ultrasonic cleaners to clean titanite gems or jewelry. Chemicals,
acids and strong solvents will surely damage this gem stone. Clean
water with a very small amount of mild soap is what would be safe,
if your stone needs more cleaning than this, leave the job to a
professional jeweler. Also rinse your titanite jewelry in cool
running water after completing the cleaning process, this will take
off any residue that might be stuck to the stone. While sphene
gemstones show good color stability, heat is something that can
damage the gem.
There is not much of folklore or tradition attached
to sphene gems, it is also not listed as a birthstone. However it is
a pretty gem and for a serious gem enthusiast, sphene or titanite
would hold much excitement.
Kaisilver can custom cut all gems
in the shape, size and quantity that you need. This is infact
possible for all gem stones and not just sphene or
titanite loose gemstones. We welcome even the smallest order
for loose gemstones, even as small as a single piece. You can order

Who Is
Kaisilver?
Having established itself as the world's
leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's
merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem
stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer
requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited
inventories, this reduces buyer options. Another problem with these
small dealers is the lack of information and reliability when it
comes to gem authenticity and value for money. Kaisilver with it's
wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the
best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. With a
support team that is compromised of jewelry and gemstone experts,
the advice and suggestions made by the team relate to your
requirements and not to fixed sales targets. The website shows a
small sampling of the gems that we offer. You can infact request for
just about any gem on the globe. All gems are sourced directly from
the source, closely inspected and then custom cut by our expert
cutters. With a buyer base that includes fashion models, government
officials, casino and resort owners, lawyers, financial experts,
students and professors, doctors and surgeons, sportsmen and
newsreaders we have become the preferred choice for quality gems and
jewelry. By cutting out middlemen commissions and multiple agents,
we provide great value for your money. Our large online operation
does not stop us from welcoming even the smallest order. Gold and
silver jewelry is custom made with equal attention to quality,
material and craftsmanship. You can choose from our designs or send
us detailed for the style and design that you need.
How To
Order?
The process to order gems and custom
jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush
purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your
requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to
provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well
informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as
much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For
example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not
particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our
gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot
instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit
margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more
durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to
payments we offer some very suitable
options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment,
it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal
never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller.
We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to
do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online
transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of
frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable
working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little
uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away
from them. There have always been fears of processing payments
through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud
reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off
many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we
do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in
various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment
besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but
at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel
comfortable using it. Shipping is done through
FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5
weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment.
Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention
and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to
gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed
for each specific order.
Buyer

satisfaction since our very existence depends solely depends on
satisfied buyers. A high degree of repeat orders and a large

been at the heart of our success. Kaisilver buyers include people

members of the armed forces, newsreaders and journalists, students,
casino and resort owners make up most of our buyer
